Cosplay is the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime. But how does that translate into our current culture? Well have you ever been to a Misfits concert. If you haven’t let me paint a picture for you. Tons of fans running around with painted faces like the Misfit Fiend. They aren’t the Misfit Fiend however they dress up to express their appreciation for the Misfits. In that same realm people around the world dress up as their favorite characters from comic books, movies and of course video games.
There is a lot of time and effort that goes into cosplay. From the actual character concept adaption to costume to execution and of course dressing up with full makeup. This undying dedication can take weeks and months to perfect. But the result is phenomenal. Seeing these characters that you have seen in the movies or comic books come to life is truly astounding.
Cosplay actual dates to early 20th century when in 1908, William Fell dressed up as Skygack along with his wife at a skating carnival. Sci-fi helped fuel the trend with the advancement of technology in the 1930’s. Now you can’t go to any Con with seeing someone dressed up as their favorite character.
